Bone Densitometry

Bone Densitometry

The equipment for a Bone Densitometry procedure consists of an examination table, an X-ray generator positioned above, a detector located below the table and computer system for imaging the scanned areas of interest. The X-ray dose rate measured by the detector is subtracted from the X-ray dose sent by the generator; the remaining value is the patient’s bone density – the amount of calcium. Although there are different methods used to measure bone density, it is reported the best technique is dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The DEXA bone densitometer system in our unit may also be used to measure total body fat content.
